Just over a year ago, Sony VAIO launched the world’s first notebook with an integrated Blu-ray Disc Drive complete with recording capabilities. Now the VAIO range of products is changing in readiness for the move to a High Definition future. With a Blu-ray Disc Combo Drive (BD ROM/ DVD+-RW/+-R DL/RAM Drive) or a Blu-ray Disc Drive (BD-R/-RE/-ROM/ DVD+-RW/+-R DL/RAM Drive) now present on a selection of notebook and Digital Home products, VAIO is opening up the door to High Definition for customers across Europe.

“We want to give more people a clear path into HD,” says Hidetoshi Takigawa, Marketing Director for VAIO Of Europe (VOE). “At its simplest, this means the ability to watch HD movies at home. For those who want to go further, some Sony VAIO products have the power to edit HD content, typically generated by the new generation of HD video cameras. Central to all of this is Blu-ray Disc itself, with its unbeatable blend of massive capacity and rapidly growing acceptance as the format of choice for HD movies. In short, we see Blu-ray Disc as the key to an HD future.”
Sony VAIO AR50-Series notebooks
Still well ahead of the curve, the Sony VAIO AR50-Series is the latest version of the first ever notebook to showcase an integrated Blu-ray Disc optical Drive. Created to be the ultimate Full HD entertainment notebook, the flagship VGN-AR51SU offers users all the benefits of Blu-ray Disc playback on its impressively large screen, plus the ability to edit their personal HD video content and then burn it onto a Double Layer 50GB Blu-ray Disc Drive. Stand-out features include the huge 17-inch X-black LCD widescreen display capable of 1080p Full HD, dual lamp illumination for exceptional brightness, and an integrated hybrid digital/analogue TV tuner complete with remote control. The AR50-Series is more than powerful enough to edit Full HD content thanks to the latest Intel Centrino Duo processor technology and NVIDIA GeForce graphics featuring hardware HD decoding.
Sony VAIO FZ20-Series notebooks
Remarkably compact and portable yet featuring a 15.4-inch screen, the FZ20-Series provides superb quality HD playback ideal for anyone who wants HD on a conveniently mobile platform, at an affordable price. Of course it’s also powerful enough to edit Full HD content and showcases the latest Intel Centrino Duo processor technology and NVIDIA GeForce graphics with hardware HD decoding for superior performance. A Double Layer Blu-ray Disc Combo Drive lets you enjoy Blu-ray Disc format movies and provides up to 50GB of storage for personal video content. An HDMI output is provided for one-cable connection to an HD-Ready TV if desired. The Sony VAIO FZ20-Series’ own screen combines the latest version of X-black LCD display enhancement with a wide colour gamut backlight designed using ‘BRAVIA’ TV technologies. This enables the screen to reproduce the vivid hues of life with remarkable precision – 90% True Colour. Photos, personal video and films are revitalised as a result, making the FZ20-Series a visual treat with wide appeal.
Sony VAIO notebooks with Blu-ray Disc Drive - LA-Series
The successor to the LA-Series, the Sony VAIO L-Series now features future-proof High Definition video thanks to an integrated slot-in Blu-ray Disc Drive, equally suitable for playing the latest Hollywood blockbusters or burning up to 50GB of HD or SD video per disc. Superbly designed with an ultra-slim chassis totally unlike other one-piece systems, the L-Series is a unique digital lifestyle product. Its twin hybrid analogue/DVB-T digital TV tuners allow you to record one programme and watch another simultaneously, and it offers massive recording capacity with a 320GB hard disk. So much storage makes the L-Series the ideal digital media centre, the place where all your digital content comes together, from film and photos to music. The L-Series comes in two variants. The LT models are distinguished by a massive 22-inch screen brilliantly illuminated by four lamps for exceptionally vibrant colour and detailed, lifelike contrast. The screen operates at 1680 x 1050 WSXGA+ resolution. The LM models feature a 19-inch screen, also with four lamp illumination, operating at 1440 x 900 WXGA+ resolution.
